Marist defeats the Alumni 10-7

On Saturday the Marist Lacrosse team faced off against some very familiar faces when they took on the program's alumni. The game, which is less about the actual competition and more about the camaraderie of playing with former teammates and members of the program, lived up to its reputation of featuring sloppy play from both sides.

Going into the game there were a number of intriguing story lines that Marist fans were keeping a close eye on, including the return of members of the most recent graduating class, among them was Corey Zindel who dazzled fans for the past four years with his uncanny passing ability. The alumni team also featured three current coaches, RJ Discher, Dan Lang, and Matt Francis, as well as former assistant coach Paul Santavicca, giving the current team the opportunity to take out their frustration on their coaches in a way that wouldn't end with them running sprints.

After falling behind in the first half, Marist adjusted to the unorthodox play of the alumni and eventually found their rhythm and began executing the way they had planned. In the second half the Marist offense flourished, scoring in a multitude of different ways led by Juniors Shane Jaeger and Connor Rice. With the current Red Foxes taking advantage of their speed and youth the alumni was unable to find an answer and would eventually be defeated 10-7.

Senior Chris Harren summed up the day saying "It's always fun playing against your former teammates and coaches, and it's hard not to get caught up in the fun, but once we went down we realized we needed to turn it up and start playing our game." Evan Guarini, a senior mid-fielder shared Harren's enthusiasm, "Days like this make you happy to be a part of this program, it was just a great atmosphere to have guys who graduated years ago still wanting to be a part of Marist Lacrosse."

  1. Actually the final score was 10-8, and there were some of us alumni parents who actually had it at 9-8. Anyway you score it, the players and the alums had a darn good time! Good luck on your capping effort.
